Artist Statement

Pollinizers depicts two large hands manually pollinating a fruit blossom. The forearms are covered with tattoos of pollinators and the reproductive anatomy of plants. This image symbolizes the role the RBG has as a steward of the land, in part by monumentalizing all the hands-on fieldwork their staff perform while also serving as a metaphor for the organization’s environmental philosophies.

This piece brings together Hind’s sculptural drawings of hands in reclaimed steel with the Aluminum Quilting Society’s (Gord Pullar, Becky Katz, Avery Tanner, Daniel Hill, etc…) community based pre-painted aluminum collage work. The image is based on the story of the disappearing bees from China’s Hanyuan County where hand pollination has been in practice since the 80’s. The entire work has been coated in beeswax, a most amazing all natural metal polish and protector.
